The City Council, the
legislative branch of City government, sets policy, enacts ordinances
and authorizes all expenditures of City funds.
The Council selects the City Manager, who serves as chief administrative
officer of the City.
The Council also appoints the City Auditor, Municipal Counselor
and Municipal Judges.
The Mayor is elected by all Oklahoma City voters. The Mayor
has an equal vote on all City Council business and presides
over City Council meetings.
The Mayor also makes appointments to City boards, commissions,
trusts and committees.
Oklahoma City is divided into eight Wards. Each Ward is represented
by the Council member elected by the voters who live in that
Ward.
The Mayor and Council serve overlapping four-year terms.
Council members also serve as members of many of the City's
trusts. Some are also active in the National League of Cities.
